With their intellects, bodies, and tools, carpenters transform mere ideas about architectural spaces into real, physical, and functional dwellings that are essential to our lives. While often physically demanding and mentally challenging, the work of a carpenter is also rooted in finding creative solutions to problems as they cut, shape, install, repair, renovate and build the structures in which we live, work, and play.

Students who complete this program will develop the practical and theoretical competencies required to be assets as new carpentry apprentices in the construction industry. This includes a comprehensive focus on practicing safety, understanding and using a wide range of materials and tools, reading blueprints, appreciating the importance of site preparation/building layout, and reinforcing the mathematical concepts important to the trade. Students will spend up to 50% of their time in the program developing practical, hands-on construction experience through various individual and group building projects. While this practical and theoretical work provides technical structure to the program, a central theme will also be appreciating teamwork in inclusive workplaces as students are welcomed and inspired to join, support, and recreate an industry that celebrates diverse excellence.

Students will receive a Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate upon successful completion of the program. Students who receive a grade of 70% or higher in all courses and the final exam will also be eligible to write the Yukon Government Carpentry Level 1 Apprenticeship Exam.

General outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will…

• Math 10 or equivalent AND English 10 or equivalent
   

• good physical condition
• good hand-eye coordination
• suitable work clothes and steel-toed work shoes

Students must successfully complete all courses in the program and maintain an overall "C" average (70%).

Graduates of the program will receive a Yukon University certificate.

Students may also be offered technical credit towards a Yukon apprenticeship and the opportunity to challenge the Carpentry Apprenticeship Level I (first-year) exam.
