ENGL 140 - First Nations Fiction
This course introduces students to a selection of fiction texts by First Nations authors from across North America. The course examines themes raised by the literature, including traditional orature, attention to heritage, and new cultural initiatives. Aspects of colonialism are considered (including residential schools and land rights) with an emphasis on the role of First Nations literature in the decolonization process. Students have the opportunity to develop critical thinking and critical writing skills through lectures, discussions, and written assignments, and to consider the contribution of First Nations fiction to contemporary literature in English.
