Jamena James Allen reappointed as YukonU Chancellor

WHITEHORSE, YT—The Board of Governors at Yukon University has reappointed Jamena James Allen as University Chancellor for a further two-year term.  
 
“I’m honoured to continue serving Yukoners, students, faculty and staff in this way,” said Allen. 
 
“We welcome Chancellor Allen’s wisdom and experience at the Board table and are pleased he is able to continue as chancellor,” said David Morrison, Yukon University Board of Governors chair. 

“Chancellor Allen has presided over two convocations and the presidential installation. I value his perspective, guidance and strong commitment to improving the experience and outcomes of YukonU students,” said Dr. Lesley Brown, Yukon University president and vice-chancellor. 

The chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University. Appointed by the board of governors, the chancellor serves to bridge the institution and the broader community. The chancellor is responsible for conferring credentials on each graduating student.  

Under the Yukon University Act, the chancellor is a voting member of the board of governors and university senate.  The position is voluntary for a renewable term of two years. 

“Over the last few years, we have had the pleasure of sharing the senate table with Chancellor Allen and are thrilled about his reappointment. Chancellor Allen is an active contributor to senate discussions, particularly around the topics of Indigenous education and student success. He actively participates in our meetings with enthusiasm and provides deep reflection on senate matters,” said Dr. Victoria Castillo, YukonU Senate co-chair.  

Following in the footsteps of Pierre Berton, T’aaḵú Tláa Pearl Keenan, Ken MacKinnon, Anyalahash Sam Johnston, Rolf Hougen, Geraldine Van Bibber, and Piers McDonald---Jamena James Allen is the eighth well-respected Yukoner to serve in this honorary capacity since 1989.
