David Morrison reappointed as YukonU Board Chair

WHITEHORSE, YT—The Government of Yukon has reappointed David Morrison as chair of the Yukon University Board of Governors for a further three-year term.  
 
The YukonU board table is a place of lively discussion amongst a diverse group of passionate, engaged Yukoners committed to ensuring accessible, affordable, relevant post-secondary education, close to home. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue as chair,” said Morrison. 

Mr. Morrison’s commitment and care for Yukon University, our students and employees, is evident in his dedicated leadership as Board of Governors chair. I appreciate his wisdom and counsel,” said Dr. Lesley Brown, Yukon University president and vice-chancellor. 

As chair, Morrison has led the search for a new president and vice-chancellor, led the outreach to Yukoners that informed the university’s first strategic plan and presided over the university’s first installation of a Chancellor, Jamena James Allen, as well as Yukon University’s first installation ceremony for a university president. 

Prior to his appointment as chair in February 2020, Morrison was chief of staff to Premier Sandy Silver and President and CEO of Yukon Energy for 12 years. Morrison also sits on the YukonU Foundation Board. 

Board member and former chair Tom Ullyett has also been reappointed to a further three-year term by the Government of Yukon.   

Dr. Sara McPhee-Knowles, an instructor in the Bachelor of Business Administration program, was elected to the board as the faculty member last month, for a term of three-years 

Nominations are currently open for a further community member. 

The Board of Governors acts on behalf of the public. As representatives from both the University and community, their role is to set and govern the University's mission and strategic plan. The Board is empowered by the Yukon University Act. 

Under the Yukon University Act, the Board of Governors chair is appointed by the Government of Yukon. The board is comprised of 17 members representing First Nations, rural communities and the public, as well as the chancellor and president. Board members can be appointed by election, the Government of Yukon and by the board itself.
