New made-in-Yukon training designed to build better managers

WHITEHORSE— To be an effective manager you need to understand your own strengths and your weaknesses first. This foundational approach is the basis for a new made-in-Yukon series of Skillful Manager Seminars from Yukon College.

“Usually people want to try to fix everyone else, when really they have to start by understanding themselves,” says seminar developer and instructor Lyn Hartley. “This series is focused on training people to become better managers, and the first step is for people to become more aware of their own strengths, challenges, and communication styles.”

The first seminar is called Managing from Your Strengths – Build on Your Best. It takes place Thursday, May 2 at Yukon College’s new downtown campus at the NorthLight Innovation Hub.

There are 10 modules in the seminar series, each focused on a different essential skill from giving and receiving feedback to strategic planning. Students who complete all modules will earn a Skillful Manager Certificate of Achievement.

Hartley created the seminars for Yukon College’s Continuing Education department. She brings more than 25 years of Northern experience in building and delivering leadership and management programs for federal, territorial, and First Nation governments.

Each seminar includes Yukon-specific content and examples that will help managers thrive while working the unique context managers face in Yukon.

“For example, the economy of scale in Yukon is different than it is in larger centres,” says Hartley. “Managers and leaders who move here are often surprised by how interconnected we are, and that interconnectivity means that we have different opportunities and different challenges.”

The seminars are relevant for employees who have some management experience or would like to gain management experience across all sectors—small companies, corporations, and governments.
