Emerging Trends and Technologies are the focus of upcoming Research, Innovation and Commercialization workshop
Whitehorse – Yukon College’s Cold Climate Innovation (CCI) and TechYukon are partnering with the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program to host the 2019 Research, Innovation and Commercialization workshop from Tuesday, March 5 to Thursday, March 7.
The theme this year is Emerging Trends and Technologies. The workshop will feature keynote presentations from national and local experts on artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, and the Internet of things.
"TechYukon is happy to be co-hosting Emerging Trends and Technologies along with our partners Cold Climate Innovation at Yukon College and the National Research Council," said Chris Lane, TechYukon President. "The event is a learning, sharing and networking opportunity for Yukon’s technology industry, which is selling its products and services internationally."
The information technology sector is rapidly growing in Canada, which means there are increasing opportunities for Yukoners to build a career in IT. Jobs in artificial intelligence blockchain, and robotics are leading the growth.
“This is a developing sector where we see opportunities for Yukoners to participate and benefit through training, jobs, and expanded possibilities for bringing home-grown technologies to market,” said Lauren Manekin Beille, Manager of Northern Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Yukon College. “Also, this type of work can be done remotely, so Yukon’s location is not necessarily a limiting factor in our participation.”
The workshop features leading experts in their fields from across Canada. Robin Winsor, President and CEO of Cybera, Alberta’s not-for-profit technology accelerator, will deliver the keynote speech on March 5. Winsor is an entrepreneur who specializes in applying new technology to traditional sectors such as oil and gas, and health.
Other featured speakers include blockchain expert Anne Connelly, and Olivia Norton, founder of artificial general intelligence company Sanctuary.ai. Local experts will share perspectives on Yukon’s digital future and the potential for emerging technologies for businesses and organizations in the territory.
