234 Yukon College students to graduate this Friday
WHITEHORSE – 234 students from over 50 degree, diploma, and certificate programs will gather with their families and Yukon College faculty and staff for the 2015 Convocation on Friday May 15 at the Yukon Arts Centre.
41 students will be graduating with honours. Early Childhood Development diploma graduate Angela Canil will be presented with the Collegiate Governor General’s Academic Award by Commissioner Doug Phillips for achieving the highest grade point average of 3.98 in the 2013-14 academic year.
Dr. Roger Epp, Deputy Provost (Academic) of the University of Alberta, will be the keynote speaker.
Dr. Lynn Echevarria will receive a professor emerita designation. This honorary position will maintain Dr. Echevarria’s professional affiliation with Yukon College as she continues to publish and present papers worldwide. Dr. Echevarria joined Yukon College in 2002 as an instructor for sociology and women’s studies and coordinator of the Women’s Studies program. She most recently published, Life Histories of Bahá'í Women in Canada: Constructing Religious Identity in the Twentieth Century, a book which has been placed in the collection of 730 university and college libraries world-wide.
Kwanlin Dün First Nation citizen Gary Bailie will receive an honorary diploma in recognition of his inspirational leadership as a mentor to youth through his role as the founder and artistic director of the annual Blue Feather Music Festival, as well as a ski coach.
Yukon College Convocation comprises of two events. Students in Applied Arts programs will receive their credential at the 11:00 a.m. ceremony. Students in Applied Science and Management, Academic and Skill Development, Centre for Northern Innovation in Mining, and Yukon Native Language Centre programs will receive their credential at the 2:00 p.m. ceremony. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each ceremony.
