The Yukon government extends support for older worker

WHITEHORSE—As part of its commitment to build an inclusive, adaptable and productive workforce, the Yukon government is pleased to announce $850,000 in funding for the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers for the next three years.

“This initiative enables older workers to enter or re-enter the workforce by helping them determine what type of work suits their needs and providing the necessary training,” Minister of Education Elaine Taylor said. “The participants gain employment skills and confidence, and the labour market gains skilled workers.”

The Targeted Initiative for Older Workers program, offered twice a year by Yukon College, helps participants secure employment through skill development and a four-week work placement.

“Yukon College is pleased to partner with the territorial and federal governments to deliver this popular program, which brings measurable and tangible benefits to the students who participate and to their families and the community in general,” said Dean of Applied Science and Management Margaret Dumkee. “A recent survey of past participants indicated that over 90 per cent felt that participating in the program had helped them to become more employable.”

Between fall 2007 and spring 2013, 223 older workers from across Yukon participated in the program; 75 per cent of participants found employment upon completion.

The Targeted Initiative for Older Workers is funded in partnership with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Participants must be between 55 and 64 years of age, unemployed, and legally entitled to work in Canada.
