Yukon College signs training agreement with Supply Chain Management Association NWT Institute
WHITEHORSE - Yukon College signed an agreement today with the Supply Chain Management Association (SCMA-NWT) that will lead to increased training in Yukon for professionals engaged in Supply Chain Management (procurement, logistics, transportation, operations management, sourcing and contract management).
Under the agreement Yukon College will work with SCMA-NWT to deliver the Supply Management Training diploma program. The program is aimed at entry and intermediate level practitioners, as well as those interested in entering the profession.
Included in the 10-module program are classes in negotiation skills, competitive bidding, contract preparation and management, accounting and finance, marketing, business planning. and communications and relational skills.
Students who attain the diploma may be eligible for entry into the Supply Chain Management Professional Designation program; a master’s level program of the profession.
“Having received my SCMP designation several years ago, I know firsthand the value that SCMA education and training programs has to offer and experienced the tremendous benefits,” said Bonita Nowell, Vice President, Education, SCMA-NWT. “We are pleased to work with Yukon College in offering the first SCMA program in the Territory.”
Today’s signing event was hosted by the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce which, on behalf of its’ members, has been seeking to raise standards for procurement and contract professionals in Yukon.
“Procurement is a significant part of economic development,” said Rick Karp, President of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce. “We are excited by today’s agreement as we believe having more SCMA trained professionals in the Territory will help improve employment and the way we conduct business in Yukon.”
“Industry has made a strong case for providing this education and training opportunity,” said Dr. Deb Bartlette, Vice President Academic & Student Services at Yukon College. “Eliminating the need for procurement and contract professionals to go outside for training is a big part of that.”
The College anticipates program delivery to begin in fall 2015, but will work with industry, governments, and potential students to decide upon a course schedule that best meets their needs.
