Yukon College welcomes two new Deans
WHITEHORSE – Yukon College has named Margaret Dumkee as Dean of Applied Science and Management and Dr. Andrew Richardson as Dean of Applied Arts.
Dumkee joins the College after spending 15 years at Aurora College in Fort Smith, NWT, most recently as head of the Business Administration program. Richardson has been with Yukon College for eight years, most recently as Chair of Liberal Arts and acting Dean.
“Our new Deans represent the best of both worlds for Yukon College as we expand our activities and evolve as an institution,” said Dr. Deb Bartlette, Vice President Academic and Student Services. “Andrew’s institutional and local knowledge has informed his vision for the future of the College and Margaret comes to us with fresh eyes and different experiences - also important for leading us into our future. I am pleased to welcome them both to their new positions. We have a very strong academic leadership team at the College.”
Dumkee is keen to encourage students to explore areas outside of their primary study focus.
“Having students from different programs work together on a project is a proven way of enriching the learning experience for them and their instructors. I am looking for ways to sow these seeds of partnership and collaboration between students and programs in Applied Science and Management,” said Dumkee.
Richardson would like to see the College expand its program offerings.
"I'm thrilled to be leading Applied Arts through what will no doubt be some exciting changes ahead. I want to see the division develop a few more signature programs, increase options for students to 'ladder up' from one program to another, and continue its commitment to program review and revitalization," said Richardson.
Both new Deans have their roots in the east coast. Dumkee holds a Master of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University and a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University. Richardson holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in English from Dalhousie University, a Master of Arts in English from Leeds University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Mount Allison University
The Dean of Applied Science and Management oversees the schools of Science, and Management, Tourism and Hospitality. The Dean of Applied Arts oversees the schools of Liberal Arts, Visual Arts (Dawson City), and Health, Education and Human Services. There are four Deans or equivalent positions at the College.
