50th Anniversary Celebration on November 29th
WHITEHORSE-Yukon College is planning a big celebration event to close out its 50th anniversary year. On Friday, November 29, the main upstairs corridor at Ayamdigut campus will be transformed into a living timeline. Current and former students and staff, as well as the general public, will enjoy music and food by the decade, retrospective displays, alumni stories, and prizes – plenty of door prizes.
In addition to the grand prize draw of flights for two to Las Vegas for alumni who submitted their story about attending Yukon College, there will be many door prizes, and a small take home gift for the first 300 arrivals.
The celebration will kick off at 7:20 p.m. with a welcome from Yukon College’s Elder in Residence, Randall Tetlichi, followed by a welcome dance, by the Dakka Kwaan Dancers. At 8:30 DJ Daniel Ashley (who is also a YC student) will start the music and dancing with hits from 1963.
For Yukon College President Dr. Karen Barnes, the best part of the anniversary year has been hearing and reading all the stories from past students, while considering the future of the college.
“We wanted people to reflect on what the College means to them, and it’s been heartwarming to see all the stories that college alumni have shared – in many cases, deeply personal stories that speak powerfully to how Yukon College impacted their lives,” said Dr. Barnes.
“At the same time, the anniversary is not just about looking back. This has been another incredible year of growth for the College. We have had the announcement of the Centre for Northern Innovation in Mining as well as the announcement on reserve lands, plus national recognition for the Yukon Research Centre’s work. Yukon College is going places. We’re making national news. We’re just getting started on the many innovations we have planned. This is good news for all of Yukon.
Over 40 staff and volunteers from Yukon College are involved in planning and coordinating the party. Door prizes have been donated from Northwestel, DeNaNe Ventures, Canadian Tire, Office Supply Centre, Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous, Waterfront Station Business Centre, BDO, Archbould Photography, Yukon Electrical, Arctic Star Printing, Vanessa Falle Photography, Yukon NDP Caucus, Lackowicz & Hoffman, and Driving Force.
The Yukon College 50th Anniversary party runs from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday November 29, at Ayamdigut campus. To RSVP, please visit www.yukoncollege.yk.ca/hub/rsvp/ or JUST SHOW UP!
