Yukon College tuition, application fees to increase in 2013

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon College Board of Governors has approved a 1.85% tuition fee increase to take effect for all courses beginning in September 2013. There was no fee increase in 2012.

The price of a course credit will go from $108 to $110. A full year of credit courses will increase by an average of $60. Other programs, including college prep, vocational, pre-employment and skills for employment will increase between $1 and $40 per offering.

“This modest tuition increase simply reflects the rising hard-costs of providing post-secondary education, such as infrastructure maintenance and technology costs,” said Colleen Wirth, director of Student Services. “Our tuition fee policy mandates that the price of education at Yukon College not exceed the lowest one third of comparable colleges in Western Canada, and that is still, and will continue to be, the case.”

In addition, the cost to apply to programs at the College will increase from $20 to $50. This increase will take effect on March 1, 2013.

“The application fee has remained static for 25 years, and no longer reflects the administrative cost of processing student applications,” said Wirth.

Yukon College revenue for 2011/12 totalled $38 million, of which tuition and registration fees accounted for only three per cent or $1.2 million. Yukon government and third party contracts cover the majority of the College budget at 54 and 33 per cent respectively.

“Yukon College is very fortunate to have the continued stable funding support of Yukon Education, as well as strengthening partnerships with other government departments, the private sector and Yukon First Nations. Partnerships that are vital to ensuring we remain a cost-effective choice for our students,” added Wirth.

Wirth pointed to $9,600 from partners in new bursaries available exclusively to Yukon College students since 2010, as well as a range of improvements to the student experience at Yukon College over the past five years. These include:

  • the hiring of a student engagement coordinator, a financial aid officer, a second student counsellor, and an “elder-in-residence” for increased First Nations student support
  • increased use of new, innovative technology in classrooms for a number of programs
  • new programs, including a Bachelor of Science offered in partnership with uAlberta
  • expanded recreational activities and the creation of a fitness room at Ayamdigut campus
  • Safe Harbour and Mental Health First Aid training for staff
  • New furniture in the common areas and Kinnikinnick Kaff, and improved chairs in some classrooms at Ayamdigut
  • New campuses in Pelly Crossing and Dawson City
