Teslin Filmmaker Carol Geddes appointed to the Yukon College Board of Governors
WHITEHORSE – Yukon Government has appointed Carol Geddes to the Board of Governors of Yukon College for a three-year term. Geddes is an award-winning filmmaker and member of the Teslin Tlingit Council.
"For Yukon First Nations people, learning traditional knowledge and skills from our elders has long been our institution of higher education," said Geddes. "But in order to fulfill the mandate of self-government we also now require the expertise and experience formal post-secondary education can give."
"Carol Geddes brings a thoughtful, creative approach to the Yukon College Board," said Paul Flaherty, chair of the Board of Governors. "We welcome her enthusiasm, perspective and experience."
In her filmmaking career, Geddes created, wrote and directed two seasons of Anash and the Legacy of the Sun-rock for APTN which garnered an international Rocky Award for Best Youth Program as well as the Japan Prize for the accompanying web site. She also wrote and directed the Gemini-nominated documentary, Picturing a People, and the animated film, Two Winters.
In 2002, Geddes was the recipient of the Queen’s Royal Jubilee Medal for her outstanding contributions to the cultural community. She has served on the Yukon Heritage Resources Board, the Canadian Council for the Arts, the Yukon Human Rights Commission, the Canadian Conference of the Arts, the National Film Board of Canada, and the Women in Media Foundation.
The Yukon College Board of Governors consists of 12 members appointed by the Yukon Government. The College act provides for three First Nations members, three Community Campus members, three members-at-large, one staff representative, one student representative, and the College President (non-voting).
