Yukon College, Volunteer Bénévoles Yukon, YuWIN join forces to present Career & Volunteer Fair
WHITEHORSE – After picking a new direction for the city, Whitehorse residents can pick a new direction for themselves. On Thursday October 18th the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre is not just a polling station; it also plays host to a career and volunteer fair.
Yukon College, Volunteer Bénévoles Yukon and Yukon Work InfoNET (YuWIN) are joining forces to present a range of volunteer, career and educational opportunities to city residents.
Over 40 representatives from companies, professional associations, non-profit groups and post-secondary educational institutions will be on hand to speak with people at the event.
“When looking for work or fresh opportunities, it’s often said that it’s not what you know, but who you know,” said Ann Bowen, Enrolment Management Coordinator, Yukon College.
“This event is where people can meet those people you should know when thinking about your career, education, or a new place to volunteer at.”
The event is aimed at high school and college students, those looking for work, and those looking for a change of employment or retirees seeking ways to make a difference.
Bowen believes that many people overlook the valuable skills and experience a person can pick up when volunteering at an event or non-profit group. This experience can pave the way for a change in jobs or, for youth struggling to figure out what they want to do, point the way to a fulfilling career.
Air North, Best Western Gold Rush Inn, Yukon Mine Training Association, Northwestel, Dana Naye Ventures, Big Brothers Big Sisters, University of Calgary, University of Alaska Southeast, Okanagan College School of Business, Alberta College of Art & Design, Yukon Public Service Commission and Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous are just some of the exhibitors who will be in attendance.
There will also be workshops offered throughout the day on topics such as handling stress in an interview, security forms for volunteers, and carrying traditional knowledge in the workplace.
The Volunteer and Career fair runs from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Longhouse Room at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre, 1171 1st Avenue, Whitehorse. For more information go to www.volunteeryukon.ca/.
