Government of Yukon supports cold climate technology research

Yukon College is receiving close to $1 million in core funding from the Government of Yukon to support the mandate of the Yukon Cold Climate Innovation Centre (YCCIC).


“This funding furthers the research conducted by the Cold Climate Innovation Centre, which will assist Yukon companies in overcoming challenges posed by a cold-weather climate by developing technologies that meet the needs of Yukon industry, government and people,” Economic Development Minister Steve Nordick said.
 

The Government of Yukon is providing $960,896 to enable the ongoing development of YCCIC, which includes the related Yukon Technology Innovation Centre.
Examples of projects undertaken by YCCIC include:

     
  • The Vacuum-Insulated Panel Testing Project to study the effectiveness of vacuum-insulated panels as a method of energy conservation in the northern environment; and
    •  
  • The Stirling Engine Modification and Testing Project to determine the usability of Stirling engines as an alternative energy source for Northwestel’s remote sites. This project could present a business opportunity for a private company to produce and market customized Stirling engine technology to potential customers.

"This funding will help us to establish a base level of service to Yukon," Yukon Research Centre vice-president of research Dr. Chris Hawkins said. "We look forward to enhancing our products and services in the future, with continued support."


“The centre has become a gateway for applied research in the circumpolar North, offering resources, institutional facilities and strategic partnerships to cold climate innovators,” Nordick added. “The commercialization of cold climate technologies will provide important economic opportunities for Yukoners and contribute to the diversification of Yukon’s economy.”


The purpose of YCCIC is to foster partnerships between applied researchers, industry and government to develop, commercialize and export sustainable cold climate technologies.
