Yukon College student chosen for Equal Voice Summit
Yukon College will be represented at the Equal Voice Summit: Promoting the Election of Women in Canada. The Student Services office is pleased to learn that student, Kayla Mintz, has been accepted to the summit on March 10th and 11th in Ottawa.
Yukon College Student Services is committed to supporting students in ways that complement their education, encourage service to their communities and country and integrate this with real life experiences. This year’s summit, titled Leveraging Women’s Leadership for the 21st Century: Changing the Game, is the 10th anniversary and the global centenary of International Women’s Day. “Our role is to ensure that Yukon has an equal voice on issues of national importance while providing students with unique opportunities of national significance”, says director of Student Services, Colleen Wirth.
Kayla Mintz is not new to her role as a representative of Yukon College. In the fall of 2010, she attended the Model Arctic Council organized by the United Nations Association of Canada. These experiences have meant a great deal to this single mother who is determined to make a difference. “I am honored to have been chosen to attend this summit and I think this will contribute to my career as a support worker for First Nations youth who may find themselves in trouble and in need of support”, says Kayla Mintz.
The Equal Voice summit will deliver workshops from morning to night for the duration of the summit. Some of these workshops include: how to support aboriginal women in leadership roles; what women need to know about running for nomination and campaigning; reflections on how media portray female politicians; how to have a life in politics; and much more (http://www.equalvoice.ca/index.cfm).
Kayla Mintz is available for interviews upon her return to Whitehorse on Monday, March 14th. She can be reached at 335-5737.
