Yukon College seeks new president
Yukon College is seeking an innovative, accomplished and inspired president to lead this unique, northern institution through its next phase of growth. The college supports two campuses in Whitehorse and 12 in Yukon’s remote communities, works closely with the 14 First Nations, and leads the way for northern colleges through climate change research at the college’s Yukon Research Centre of Excellence.
The search for a new president has begun, with the expectation that a new president will begin on July 1, 2011. President Terry Weninger’s term will be completed in August.
“I have enjoyed the last five years, and while Yukon College made a great deal of progress in that time, it is due to the employees of the College who are enthused about the role the institution can and does play in the territory, and they bring that enthusiasm to work every day”, said Weninger.
President Weninger’s term has resulted in numerous changes to the institution, including: an increase in the student population; the opening of the Yukon Research Centre of Excellence; the introduction of a centralized marketing and recruitment department; the 2009 revisions to the College Act which provide YC with degree granting powers; introduction of several new programs including the oversubscribed Multimedia Certificate program, soon to include a Diploma option, the introduction of the Heritage and Culture Certificate program, delivered to every Yukon community, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Conservation Sciences in partnership with the University of Alberta; enhancement of our already strong distance delivery options; further development of partnerships with Outside universities, business, industry and First Nations; and finally, the launch of the Northern Institute of Social Justice.
"This transition will mark a new growth phase for the institution", said Clarence Timmons, Chair of Yukon College Board. "It’s been an inspiring five years under President Weninger and we appreciate all he’s done for the institution.”
