Student Union Inaugurates Bouldering Wall
Whitehorse – On Monday, September 13, Yukon College Students will officially open the bouldering wall in the Yukon College gymnasium. Since 2008, the Student Union, along with the collaborative support of Director Colleen Wirth and the Student Services department, has been working to build financial support for the wall design and installation. The inauguration will celebrate this accomplishment.
The idea started with a group of students who wanted to initiate a group activity or gathering that is inexpensive and available between or after classes. The Student Union has recently upgraded their lounge with a wide screen television, a pool table, Rock Band drums, and vending machines. The addition of the climbing wall appeals to those with high energy at the College community and especially to those students living in residence without transportation. “We appreciate the support the College has shown in this initiative,” says Fabi Naves, President of the Student Union. “The College matched our funds and modified their insurance to get this initiative moving.” The collaborative gesture supports the College’s strategic desire to build a spirited community of learners.
The 12 foot wall was designed by a local organization, Equinox Adventure Learning that hosts outdoor leadership and team building exercises at the Takhini Hotsprings climbing wall and Zip-line. The wall is engineered with removable climbing holds for provision of different climbing routes. Large mats are installed for falls and trained safety supervisors will be on hand at every bouldering event.
Monday’s activities will start at noon in the gymnasium. Ryan Agar will be demonstrating safety and engaging techniques to be used with the wall. Students and staff who wish to participate as supervisors can sign up at Student Services for the Bouldering Safety Clinic which will take place on Tuesday, September 21 and September 28, 7-9 p.m. Once there are sufficient Safety Supervisors, the Wall will be available to students and staff at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
The Wall inauguration will be held in the gymnasium on Monday, September 13 at noon.
