YC Kids Camp open house June 3-5 for parents and kids

WHITEHORSE – Parents who have enrolled their kids in the YC Kids Camps program, or are thinking about it, will have a chance to meet the camp staff, complete the registration, and check out some of the camp activities this week.

From 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Monday June 3, Tuesday June 4, and Wednesday June 5, camp staff will be at the main reception area of Yukon College’s Ayamdigut campus in Whitehorse.

There are a record 29 camps being offered this summer, including new “Best of” camps, a "Get the Beat!" music camp and Munchkin camps for 5-7 year olds. The Science, Technology or Trades Expedition camps will each run 6 times with separate offerings for the 8-11 and 11-13 age-groups for Science and Technology, and 9-11 or 11-13 for Trades.

The Whitehorse camps run from June 17 to August 16. Staff will also be taking camps into the communities with camps planned for Mayo, Teslin, Watson Lake, Pelly Crossing, Haines Junction, and twice in Dawson City.

Camps are filling up fast. June camps and the music camp in August are already full. Places are still available in July camps and the August “Best of” camps.

Activities planned for the Trades Expedition camps include experimenting with an arc reactor, building bird houses, flower boxes and their own personal projects, developing culinary skills in the College kitchens, and learning about geology and mining.

Activities planned for the Science Expedition camps include exploring the topics of Space and the Human Body where they can design rockets and learn about astronaut training. They will also have the opportunity to create dragon snot, and dissect rats and various body parts such as brains, eyes and hearts.

Activities planned for the Technology Expedition camps include a chance to become computer programmers and creating simple games from scratch, using iPads to create stop-motion videos and explore music apps, as well as building their own robots. This year there are new add-ons that can make their robot designs more complex and challenging.

In the Munchkins camps kids will get to experiment with dry-ice smokescreens, rocket launchers, race cars that are propelled by mixing pop and mentos, create their own mouse-pads and learn how to make ice-cream.
